Barbara Adey, Vice President, Hewlett-Packard
Barbara Adey is Vice President of Business Development in the Enterprise Group at Hewlett-Packard. Barbara leverages a unique mix of engineering, sales, operations and product management expertise to identify and capture opportunities for growth and profitability.
Barbara has developed company strategies, led product launches and defined critical go-to-market models. Previously, she developed the plan for Cisco’s market entry into Cloud/Data Center in 2009 and ran the worldwide sales launch of Cisco TelePresence in 2006.
Barbara holds a bachelor’s degree in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and an MBA from York University. She is a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada.
Nancy Bush, Chief Financial Officer, Anomali
Nancy Bush brings over 20 years of financial management experience and expertise at a number of Silicon Valley-based high technology companies to her CFO role at Anomali. As a key member of executive teams in dynamic technology companies, Nancy has driven significant shareholder value and managed key administrative and operational functions. These companies include Adaptive Insights, where she served as Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller; Fortinet, where she was Acting CFO and Vice President of Finance; and ArcSight, where she was and VP of Finance. She has also served as the Vice President, Finance at Packeteer and Maxtor. Previously she held senior finance positions at Terayon and SGI. Nancy holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia and is actively involved in supporting the community through giving and service at non-profits such as ALearn.
Thomas J. Crotty, Managing Director, Family Office Advisory, Ascent Private Capital Management
Tom Crotty brings over 40 years of business, accounting and entrepreneurial experience to his role as Managing Director, Family Office Advisory in Ascent’s San Francisco Regional Office. Tom has worked with a variety of family and venture backed businesses, both internally as a C-level executive and owner as well as in the capacity of a trusted consultant. His background and skills, and his passion for growing successful organizations, makes him a valuable resource to Ascent families.
Tom earned his Bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University and an M.B.A. from Anderson’s Graduate School of Management at UCLA. A Certified Public Accountant, he has helped turn around struggling companies, grow new and established enterprises, and been a financial and management consultant to business owners in a number of industries.
Tom has also been extensively involved on Boards of Trustees for such non-profits as Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga where he served as President of the Board for each entity. Currently, Tom serves on the board of trustees for ALearn, Montalvo Arts Center (Chair of Finance) and for the Catholic Community Foundation of Santa Clara County. He also serves on the Audit Committee for Catholic Charities.
Juan Cruz, Superintendent, Franklin-McKinley School District
Juan Cruz was appointed Superintendent of the Franklin-McKinley School District in July 2015. Franklin-McKinley district has 16 schools serving students in PK-8th grade.
Prior to becoming Superintendent, Juan served as Associate Superintendent for Educational Services for the East Side Union High School District. He also served as Principal at Santa Teresa and Yerba Buena High Schools, and Associate Principal of Educational Development at Piedmont Hills High School. He started his career teaching Social Science at Yerba Buena High School.
Juan attended San Jose State University where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science and a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership.
Jared Darby, Educator, Mountain View High School
Jared Darby, a previous industry mathematician, has been an educator since 2010, including four summers as an ALearn teacher. Jared currently teaches mathematics and advises student government at Mountain View High School. He also coordinates all student driven activities with the goal of creating more empathy and inclusivity on Mountain View’s diverse campus.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Pure Mathematics from California State University, Monterey Bay, Jared worked as an Actuarial Analyst for Capital Insurance Group. In realizing that his happiness wasn’t at a desk, Jared pulled on his favorite dinosaur socks and headed off to combine mathematics and giving back to the world. He followed his dream of helping children and teens succeed in life by becoming a teacher. Jared received his teaching credential in his hometown at Sacramento State while teaching in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood where he found love in helping students find their path and rise to their potential.
Dr. Huy Do, Professor of Radiology, Stanford University Medical Center
Huy M. Do, M.D. has been on faculty at the Stanford University School of Medicine for nearly 20 years. He holds appointments in the departments of Radiology and Neurosurgery with the rank of Professor. His area of expertise is in minimally invasive treatment of patients with vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord such as acute stroke, aneurysms, and vascular malformation. He has conducted research, published and lectured extensively on these subjects. Dr. Do was the director of the neuroradiology fellowship training program at Stanford for over 10 years; he has taught and trained over 100 physicians in the subspecialty of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. He served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery, and is currently on the editorial board of several medical journals and on the Advisory Committee for the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Do received his bachelor and medical degrees from Brown University. He completed residency and fellowship programs at the University of Washington, UCLA, and the University of Virginia.
Nan Geschke, Co-Founder, Los Altos History Museum
Nan Geschke is a retired librarian and middle school teacher. She managed the Westinghouse Research Facility library in Sunnyvale during the 1980’s. Nan also worked as a sales director and a consultant for a small library placement firm until 1993. Nan served as President of the San Andreas (Silicon Valley) chapter of the Special Libraries Association in 1986-87.
Nan served on the Historical Commission of the City of Los Altos, California for ten years from 1991 to 2000, serving as chair for six years. While on the commission, Nan produced the Los Altos History Show for eight years. She was one of two project managers who helped plan and build Los Altos’ first museum, the Los Altos History Museum. She holds a bachelors degree in History and Political Science from Marygrove College and a master’s degree in Library Science from San Jose State University.
Kathryn S. Hanson, Ph.D., CEO and Founder, ALearn
Dr. Hanson is Founder and CEO of ALearn. Before ALearn, she was President of The Hanson Group, a strategy and marketing consulting firm for high technology and Internet companies. Her clients included the following technology companies: Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Silicon Graphics, National Semiconductor and many Internet and software companies.
She was a founder of eMentoring, an elearning company which merged into Pensare; and a co-founder of Satmetrix, a Customer Satisfaction Internet Software company. Hanson has served on many Boards, for public, private and non-profit institutions. She currently serves on the Board of Trident, an online university serving the military, as well as the ALearn Board. She has a BA in English with Distinction from Stanford University, a MA and a Ph.D. in English from University of Chicago, and a MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School.
Kathryn was named one of Silicon Valley's Women of Influence for the year 2011 by the San Jose Business Journal. She was honored as a Purpose Prize Fellow by Civic Ventures in 2012. In 2013, she was an American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley Fellow, and honored as Harvard Business School’s 100 Women of California as part of its celebration of 50 years of women at HBS. In 2014, Kathryn was named "Los Altan of the Year."
Susan Harrington, Philanthropist
In addition to the ALearn Board, Susan Harrington serves on the Leadership Council for Global Fund for Children and the Leadership Council for NARAL. She spent twenty years as a high tech recruiter, focusing on semiconductor start-up companies, including several as the in-house recruiter to Rambus, among others. Prior to that, she taught junior high and high school, primarily in the Sequoia Union High School District.
After retiring, Susan became active with The Philanthropy Workshop West and a number of non-profit pursuits. She served on the Planned Parenthood Advocates Board for 6 years.
Susan is a Bay Area native, having grown up in San Carlos and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkeley and a teaching credential from California State University, Long Beach.
Brandon Middleton, Solution Sales, Microsoft
Brandon Middleton is a Security Sales Manager for Microsoft based out of Silicon Valley. Brandon hails originally from Chicago and joined Microsoft after a 9-year career at Cisco Systems. He brings a wealth of industry experience, including 10 years of sales, marketing and engineering experience within the Northern California market. Brandon daily brings his technical and business leadership to work to grow the cloud capacity and capability of Microsoft’s top customers and partners in the Bay Area. He has been a board member of the San Jose Repertory Theater and a board fellow at the Mural Music and Arts Project.
Brandon holds and M.B.A. from University of California Berkeley and a B.S. Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. In his spare time, Brandon enjoys playing music with his band and spending quality time with his wife, five year old daughter, and newborn son.
Michelle Miller-Edwards, Director, Global Technology Services, IBM
Michelle is currently Director and Business Line Executive for Multi-Vendor Services at IBM. Michelle has been in the Silicon Valley for more than 20 years and has worked with many of its Industry leaders. Of significance, she was with Cisco for 16 years where she exceled in various roles including: services program management, service sales, business transformation solutions and was a core member of the IBM Strategic Alliance team. In addition, Michelle spent two years consulting at NetApp on its channel program and most recently was Director for the Enterprise & Infrastructure Division at Jabil Circuits.
A native Californian, growing up in the small town of Vallejo, Michelle attended California State University Sacramento and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business. In 2010, she earned alumni status from Harvard Business School through successful completion of the Program for Leadership Development and Executive Education. She lives in Redwood City with her husband of 13 years and enjoys outdoor sports including skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.
Michelle’s comprehensive professional background, business outcomes-based accomplishments, and first-hand experience as an under-served child in a failing public school system in the 1980s will help drive continued growth, understanding, awareness and success as an ALearn Board member.
Rebeca Obregon-Jimenez, Senior Vice President Sales, Southwest Region, Amkor Technology
Rebeca Jimenez joined Amkor in August 2014 and currently supports the Sales Organization as Regional Sales Manager for the Southwest Sales Region. Prior to that, she supported the Advanced Products division in strategic program management. Ms. Jimenez has more than 25 years of experience in the global semiconductor industry. Prior to joining Amkor, she spent 15 years with IDT (previously ICS) in both test engineering and manufacturing roles as well as management positions. Prior to IDT, Ms. Jimenez worked in various engineering and engineering management roles at Motorola.
Ms. Jimenez holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, as well as a Masters in Electrical Engineering from National Technological University.
Doug Spreng, Retired Chairman and CEO, Ubicom, Inc.
Doug Spreng is a 40+-year high tech industry veteran who has held leadership positions with numerous high-profile semiconductor and equipment companies in the computer and communications market. Most recently, he was Chairman and CEO of Ubicom, Inc., a leading supplier of communication processors for wireless LAN applications. Before that, he was president and COO at AMCC, a publicly traded communications IC company. He has served on the boards of numerous high tech companies as well as the Palo Alto YMCA.
Kelley Steven-Waiss, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, HERE
ALearn Chair of Board
Kelley Steven-Waiss is responsible for all aspects of global HR, including business partners, operations, talent acquisition, organizational development, training, compensation, benefits, payroll, mobility, as well as corporate real estate and facilities. Most recently, she served as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources at Extreme Networks. Prior to joining Extreme Networks, she was with Integrated Device Technology (IDT) where she served as Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources.
Kelley serves on the Board of Directors of Form Factor, where she sits on both the Nominating & Governance Committee and the Compensation Committee.
Kelley has a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Arizona and a Master of Arts in Human Resources and Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco.
Allyn Taylor, Retired Attorney, DLA Piper US LLP
Allyn Taylor is the Secretary of ALearn's Board of Directors. She spent over 25 years with the global law firm DLA Piper US LLP (and its predecessor firms) specializing in the field of trademark and copyright law. She represented companies ranging from start-ups to large multinational corporations, aiding them in their global brand selection, registration, management, promotion and enforcement.
Allyn serves as a member on the Stanford Campus Residential Leaseholders Board of Directors, as well as on its Capital Committee. She spends one to two days per week tutoring middle-school-aged children at the Boys and Girls Club located in East Palo Alto. She is also an active angel investor in Golden Seeds, a group which seeks out and funds women-owned and/or operated start-ups. Allyn graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. (Honors) in Economics and from Columbia Law School, where she was a Sloan Scholar.
Valerie Vasquez, Audit Partner, Deloitte & Touche LLP
Valerie Vasquez is the Treasurer of ALearn's Board of Directors. She is an audit partner in the San Jose office of Deloitte & Touche, specializing in networking and wireless communications clients. She has over 20 years of experience and serves both publicly traded and private companies, advising them in structuring contracts, mergers and acquisitions, general accounting issues and transactions such as initial public offerings.
Valerie has been on the boards of other not-for-profits, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society, and United Way and is active with the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. Valerie has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Iowa State University and is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
