Kathryn Hanson, Ph.D., Founder and CEO
Dr. Hanson is Founder and CEO of ALearn. Before ALearn, she was President of The Hanson Group, a strategy and marketing consulting firm for high technology and Internet companies. Her clients included the following technology companies: Hewlett Packard, Sun, Silicon Graphics, National Semiconductor and many Internet and software companies.
She was a founder of eMentoring, an elearning company which merged into Pensare; and a co-founder of Satmetrix, a Customer Satisfaction Internet Software company. Hanson has served on many Boards, for public, private and non-profit institutions. She currently serves on the Board of Trident, an online university serving the military, as well as the ALearn Board. She has a BA in English with Distinction from Stanford University, a MA and a Ph.D. in English from University of Chicago, and a MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School.
Kathryn was named one of Silicon Valley's Women of Influence for the year 2011 by the San Jose Business Journal. She was honored as a Purpose Prize Fellow by Civic Ventures in 2012. In 2013, she was an American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley Fellow, and honored as Harvard Business School’s 100 Women of California as part of its celebration of 50 years of women at HBS. In 2014, Kathryn was named "Los Altan of the Year."
Sharon Ogbor, Vice President of Development
Sharon Ogbor joined ALearn in June 2015. She brings with her nearly 25 years of experience in executive and program management in nonprofit health and government organizations, including the March of Dimes, the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation, the Diabetes Society, South Bay Children’s Medical Center, National Brain Tumor Society, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She has extensive experience in program and fund development and management, proposal writing and grants management, strategic planning and implementation, corporate/community partnerships, and teambuilding/leadership development.
Sharon holds a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Early Childhood Education from Loma Linda University and a M.S.W. in Social Work from the University of Southern California.
Carol Flaherty, Vice President of Operations
Carol Flaherty joined ALearn in October 2011. She brings with her more than 30 years of experience in finance, sales, and fundraising in public and non-profit companies such as Macrovision, Digital Link Corporation, the Tech Museum of Innovation, and Silicon Valley Education Foundation. Carol has extensive financial management, analysis and reporting expertise in $5M to $125M operations, building and managing results-oriented organizations with strong emphasis on measurements, and creating one, three and five-year operating and strategic plans.
Carol has a B.A. in Economics, an MBA in Managerial Finance, and studies towards a Juris Doctorate.
Linda Prieto, Ph.D., Vice President of Programs
Linda Prieto became the Vice President of Programs in February 2016. Prior to ALearn, Linda was an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Human Development Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In addition to teaching, she provided educational consulting services in the areas of cultural and linguistic diversity. Prior to that, she was an Assistant Professor of Education at both Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Midwestern State University. Linda has also held numerous positions promoting bilingualism and biculturalism in both academia and the nonprofit sectors.
Linda has a B.A. in Sociology from Stanford, a Master of Education from Harvard, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis on Cultural Studies in Education and a Graduate Portfolio in Mexican American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
Meghan Hibner, Development Manager
Meghan joins ALearn after nearly a decade of experience in nonprofit fundraising for Silicon Valley nonprofits. She has significant experience in grants management, individual giving, event planning, and relationship building. A high school dropout herself, Meghan has a deep understanding of the challenges students face on the road to college and is passionate about working to eliminate these obstacles so all students have the opportunity to succeed. In addition to her work in education, Meghan serves on the Board of Directors at Heart of the Valley, a nonprofit that helps seniors remain living independently in their homes.
Meghan holds a B.A. with High Honors in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a M.A. in English Composition from San Francisco State University.
Winnie Yip Fong, Director of Programs
Winnie brings to ALearn many year of nonprofit experience in the Bay Area and abroad; including most recently running an education startup in Hong Kong which provides learning support and mentoring to underserved students. Prior to that, she had worked for a number of nonprofit healthcare and community services organizations in the Bay Area, providing communications and project management support in achieving the organizational objectives. Winnie is passionate about reducing the achievement gap of underserved students; and is excited of the opportunity to contribute to the mission of ALearn with her program management, people development, and measurement expertise.
Alice Powlen Alden,
Manager of Programs
Alice brings years of experience in program management, teaching, and innovative curriculum design. She has worked as a Field Science Educator at NatureBridge, taught college courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and directed a summer camp. Most recently, she worked on the launch of the Experimentory at Deerfield Academy— an innovative technology-based summer program for middle school students.
Alice is passionate about helping underserved students exceed grade-level standards and prepare for college.
Alice has a B.A. in English Literature from Oberlin College and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Manager of Programs
Rachel started her career as a software engineer all the while volunteering for different social service agencies before transitioning into non-profit management professionally. Prior to joining ALearn, Rachel worked at a crisis center developing and coordinating crisis intervention/suicide prevention programs. She has a strong interest in education as well as social justice issues and has volunteered in coaching, tutoring and teaching roles at home and abroad.
Rachel has a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Iowa.
Eric Vasquez, Office Operations Manager
Eric comes to us from Sunday Friends, where he was a Resource Developer. He is currently working towards a Bachelor’s in Technology and Entrepreneurial Management from the Arizona State University online program. Originally from Visalia, California, Eric was in the AVID program in high school, as an AVID student as well as an AVID Tutor. He is the first in his family to attend college.
Phil Palmer, Human Resources Consultant
Phil Palmer started providing ALearn with talent acquisition and other HR consulting services on a pro bono basis in 2013. He brings with him over 30 years of HR management experience in firms such as Xerox, Siemens, and Boston Scientific. He especially enjoys using his HR management skills to support the mission of ALearn.
Phil holds an A.B. in English from Dartmouth College, an M.A. in English from Stanford University, and an MBA from UCLA.
Mary Tate, Special Programs
Mary Tate is an experienced and versatile sales and marketing executive who has spent the last four years assisting high-tech companies develop and implement their channel partner programs. This has included multiple surveys with in-depth research and data analysis, benchmarks that compare partner program attributes, program assessments, development of program frameworks and program implementation at such companies as Cisco, Sophos, VMware, Ciena, Symantec, AMD, SUN, TCS, PayPal and many others. Mary is respected as a strong team player as well as a creative and strategic thinker.
Mary provides marketing services to Alearn. She is also the Advisor and Emeritus Director for the HP Alumni Organization and a member of ASAP (Association for Strategic Alliance Professionals).
