Math Acceleration Program - MAP

Middle school is an important time to bring struggling students up to grade level in math. This is why we offer the MAP (Math Acceleration Program) for students entering 5th through 8th grades. ALearn’s MAP is an intensive summer enrichment program that helps rising 5th to 8th grade underrepresented students succeed in Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Common Core Math. The program’s 80 hours (19 days) of instruction are equivalent to approximately one half a year of math instruction and help close the middle school achievement gap in mathematics. MAP also helps counter “summer learning loss” by keeping students actively engaged in learning through brain-stimulating lessons and activities. MAP classes are based on Common Core standards and include:

  • Hands-on, project-based, blended learning
  • Credentialed teachers
  • College student teaching assistants, many are the first in their families to attend college and are important role models
  • Comprehensive assessments of students pre- and post-program

MAP+ is our after-school math support program for 6th and 7th grade students who were in ALearn’s Math Acceleration Program (MAP) the previous summer and/or are below grade level. The program runs for 2 to 3 months. MAP+ program is composed of:

  • Khan Academy on-line math curriculum
  • RAFT math hands-on activities
  • Support for 6th and 7th grade math Common Core Standards

Girls Exploring Math - GEM

ALearn’s Girls Exploring Math (GEM) is an after-school enrichment program that encourages and supports the exploration of STEM careers by girls. Participating middle school students participate in hands-on STEM workshops, positive mindset and college readiness lessons, presentations by STEM professionals, and fieldtrips.  The 2 to 3 month program includes these main elements:

  • Leadership and empowerment lessons
  • Girl Talks—Teacher-led discussions of issues relevant to the girls’ lives, from choosing friends to handling failure to thinking about math-related careers
  • Inspiring guest speakers: successful professional women describe their STEM careers
  • STEM and college fieldtrips
  • Positive mindset lessons to build confidence and perseverance
  • Hands-on STEM projects led by corporate female STEM professionals
