Math Acceleration Program (MAP)

MAP Stories:
The Issue:
Most poor, Hispanic and immigrant learners are significantly behind in math by middle school. If they don’t catch up in middle school, they are unlikely to catch up in high school and many don’t graduate and/or go on to college as a result.

The Opportunity:
Provide a special intensive summer program that is based on interactive learning that fully engages the students in math, helps them increase their competency and confidence, and stops their pattern of failure.

MAP: The Solution
  • Serves middle school students who are below proficiency at math on standardized tests
  • Incorporates a college-going culture, with college students as teaching assistants and College Info Nights
  • Encourages study skills and positive attitudes toward math
  • Trains and uses credentialed teachers from the School District partners
  • Tracks progress through pre- and post-tests
The Partners:
  • Alum Rock School District (2010)
  • Berryessa School District (2010)
  • Franklin-McKinley School District (2010)
  • Milpitas Unified School District (2010)
  • Mt. Pleasant School District (2010)
  • Oak Grove School District (2009-2010)
  • Orchard School District (2010)
  • San Jose Unified School District (2010)
