Program Description:

MAP+ is an After School math support class for 6th and 7th grade students who were in Math Acceleration Program (MAP) the previous summer and/or are below grade level (at “Basic” level of math proficiency). The duration of the program is from mid-January through end of April and is held 3-4 days a week for 12 weeks for 48 to 54 hours of class time. The program uses a blended instruction model using Khan Academy on-line math curriculum plus RAFT math hands-on activities which support 6th and 7th grade Common Core Standards.

Program Goals:

  • Help low income, first generation middle school students gain proficiency in math, so they can achieve proficiency in Algebra, which is the gate keeper to high school’s college prep courses
  • Develop a program that is scalable, sustainable and enables positive systemic change and can be implemented in multiple sites as supplemental in-school or out-of-school programs

Classroom Activities:

  • The students follow the provided course curriculum based on Khan Academy modules on the school’s  computer lab
  • The students and teacher monitor daily student progress toward weekly and program goals
  • The teacher facilitate hands-on group activities
  • High school student tutors help with set up and take down of the lessons, on-line or at tables with hands-on materials
  • College student Coordinators lead activities/discussions of college and how to prepare for college
  • The MAP+ staff and teachers organize end program party for students
  • The MAP+ program staff tracks student results; provide individual student reports to appropriate math teachers such that they may continue to help students overcome gaps/misconceptions

Course Curriculum:

ALearn has contracted the Santa Clara County Office of Education Math Coordinator team to develop the 6th and 7th grade math course guide which will include the following:

  • Aligned curriculum with the 6th and 7th grade math Common Core Standards
  • Select modules and module sequence from Khan Academy
